About Peru

Peru, situated in western South America, is a diverse and geographically rich country known for its stunning landscapes, ancient civilizations, and vibrant culture. Bordered by Ecuador and Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the southeast, Chile to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Peru covers an area of approximately 1.28 million square kilometers (496,000 square miles).
The geography of Peru is characterized by three main regions: the coastal desert, the Andean highlands, and the Amazon rainforest.
The coastal desert, known as the Costa, extends along the Pacific coastline and is marked by arid landscapes, sandy beaches, and fertile valleys formed by rivers flowing from the Andes. The coastal region experiences a mild climate with little rainfall, making it ideal for agriculture and urban centers such as Lima, the capital city.
The Andean highlands, known as the Sierra, are dominated by the towering peaks of the Andes Mountains, which run parallel to the Pacific coast. This region is home to some of the highest mountain peaks in the Americas, including Huascarán, the tallest mountain in Peru standing at 6,768 meters (22,205 feet) above sea level. The Andean highlands are also characterized by deep valleys, high-altitude plateaus (known as puna), and traditional indigenous communities.
To the east of the Andes lies the Amazon rainforest, known as the Selva, which covers more than half of Peru's territory. This region is characterized by dense tropical rainforests, winding rivers, and incredible biodiversity, including a vast array of plant and animal species.
Peru's diverse geography contributes to its rich cultural heritage, with ancient civilizations such as the Inca leaving behind impressive archaeological sites like Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines. Additionally, Peru's natural resources, including minerals, agriculture, and ecotourism, play a significant role in its economy and development.
